Resetting PRAM on an Apple Computer

Problem

I am experiencing issues related to volume, display resolution, startup disk selection, and other similar settings.

Environment

The article applies to Intel-based Apple computers running MacOS 10.15 to 12.6. Silicon-based Apple computers do not have this functionality.

Resolution

  1. Shut down your Mac and disconnect all USB devices (except wired keyboards).
  2. Hold down the Command + Option + P + R keys (before the gray screen appears!)
  3. Continue holding the keys for 20 seconds. During this time, you may hear the startup tone or see the Apple logo more than once.

Cause

PRAM stores settings related to volume, display resolution, startup disk selection, and other similar settings. Resetting PRAM can resolve certain issues related to these settings.
