How Do I Check the Battery Status of My Windows Laptop?

Problem

My Windows laptop's battery doesn't seem to hold a charge. How do I check the battery health?

 

Environment

The article applies to Gustavus laptop users running Windows.

 

Resolution

  1. Right-click the Start menu and select Terminal
  2. Type powercfg /batteryreport at the command prompt to create a report
  3. In File Explorer, navigate to C:\Users\username, with the username being your Gustavus username
  4. Send the battery-report.html results file to helpline@gustavus.edu

 

Cause

Powering off randomly and short battery life are signs of a bad battery.
