Student Account Creation and Activation

Overview

The purpose of this page is to outline the student account creation and activation process that prospective students will go through.  Students can start this process after receiving a mailed packet that includes their Gustavus student ID number, or after filling out the Admission Decision Reply electronic form in the applicant portal (apply.gustavus.edu/account/). Once the prospective student fills out the Admission Decision Reply form, they will be provided with their ID number and a link to pay their deposit.  A paper packet will also be mailed to them at this time, containing their ID number.  The link to pay the deposit will direct students to gustavus.edu/welcome.

Account Creation Process

  • Deposited students will receive an email that includes their Gustavus ID number. They will need to visit gustavus.edu/welcome and start the account creation process by entering their ID number and their personal email address they have on file with Gustavus.
  • Students will receive an email at the email we have on file. The subject will be Your Gustavus account is ready to be created. They will need to click the link in the email. If you do not see it, please check your spam folder. 
    • This process will take 5-10 minutes.
    • Once you have the link opened, please log out of your personal email account in your browser.
  • For identification purposes, they will receive a text message to the cell phone on file with Gustavus. They will enter the code on the web page that was just opened. 
  • Once that number is typed in, they will need to agree to the acceptable use policy by checking the box at the bottom of the page.
  • Students will then verify their Legal First, Middle, and Last Name, and then enter a chosen name if they would like (the chosen name will be used in providing options for a username/email address)
    • If the legal name is wrong, they have the opportunity to request that it is edited, however this will delay the account creation process 
  • Students will select a username by clicking the button next to the username they would prefer (six options), and click Select Username
    • This step can take 1-2 minutes to process
  • Students will then choose a passphrase (15 characters)
    • The passphrase must be at least 15 characters and cannot contain the following symbols: [, ', ", or \.  Our system will also check against external databases to ensure the chosen passphrase has not been exposed in any known data breaches.  If the passphrase has been exposed, the user will have to choose a different passphrase
  • Once a passphrase is selected, they will click the Log In button to help them set up their email account on the Gmail app on their phone (iOS mail is not supported)
    • Open Gmail if already open, click on the profile button in the top right corner, tap Add Another Account
    • Choose Google, and sign in with their Gustavus email address and passphrase
  • Once that is completed, return to your browser, and click Set Up, once logged in, you will be prompted to enroll in 2-Step Verification. Click Enroll.
    • Click the Turn on 2-Step Verification button at the bottom of the page.
    • Once complete return to the account creation page and click the link to proceed to the final steps.
