• The best way to avoid getting spyware and adware is by not installing "high-risk" applications like free video downloading software, and other suspect "freeware" and "shareware" programs

• Be wary of the links you click, and ensure emails with links to click on are from trusted senders
• Make sure your operating system, software, and browser plug-ins are all up to date
• Use a long and unique password
