How to Take a Screenshot on an Apple Computer

Problem

I'd like to capture an image of my computer screen.

Environment

The article applies to computers running macOS Monterey and up.

Resolution

  • To capture the entire screen, press Command + Shift + 3
  • To capture a portion of the screen, press Command + Shift + 4, then select the area you want to capture
  • To capture a window or menu, press Command + Shift + 4, then press the Spacebar, and then click on the window or menu you want to capture

The screenshot will appear on the bottom right of the screen for some time. Clicking on it will allow you to edit the image, share the image, or delete it. If you did not click the image, the screenshot will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop by default.
