Adware Removal (Windows)

Problem


My computer has been infected with adware and I would like to remove it.

 

Environment


The article applies to personally-owned Windows computers.  Gustavus employees who suspect their Gustavus-owned Windows machine may be infected should contact Technology Services. 

 

Resolution


1. Go to the Malwarebytes website

2. Select the free download button

3. Install the program following the prompts. 

4. After the program installs, click get started

5. You can chose to buy a premium version of the program or select maybe later

6. Click get started

7. Under the scanner leading, click scan

8. View scan results

9. Select all files that appear and click quarantine

 

Cause


A computer can become infected with Adware by a number of ways, but most likely from downloading or clicking on questionable links from the Internet. Often times, it is possible that a user has no idea that they are downloading harmful software because Adware disguises itself with names such as Windows Update Feature Update or Microsoft Office Installer.
