How Do I Add Google Authenticator to My Account?

Body

Problem

I am not getting push notifications on my phone and need an alternate way to sign into my Gustavus Google account.

Environment

The article applies to users currently enrolled in Google Two Step Verification (2SV).

Resolution

  1. Download the "Google Authenticator" application on your devices app store.
  2. Open the "Google Authenticator" application on your device. You may need to sign in. You may select either a personal account on your device or your Gustavus account.
  3. Tap "set up authenticator".
    • On some devices, tap Get Started. If you already are using authenticator for other codes, tap on the "+" icon in the lower-right corner and select "Scan a QR code."
    • If you are not using a computer select "Enter a setup key."
  4. Go to your Google Account settings by visiting myaccount.google.com and sign in if prompted.
  5. Click on "Security" in the left-hand menu.
  6. Scroll down to the "Authenticator" button at the bottom of the "How to sign into Google" section.
  7. Enter your password if prompted.
  8. Scan the QR code presented on the computer screen with your device.
    • If you are not setting this up on a computer, select "Can't scan it" and follow the on screen instructions.
  9. Enter the verification code the computer requests to complete setup.

Cause

The preferred primary method for completing Google 2SV is to configure and accept push notifications through an approved Google application on your mobile device.  However, use of the Google Authenticator app is an approved backup method as well as an option for use when your phone is offline.
