How to Save Large Files in Google Drive and Link Them into Moodle

Body

Problem

I want to upload a file to Moodle that is larger than Moodle's file size limit (100MB).

Environment

The article applies to users who are owners of a course in Moodle.

Resolution

  1. Navigate to drive.google.com
  2. Drag the desired file into Google Drive. The file will be uploaded
    • To keep your files organized, you can first click the +New button in Google Drive, click on New Folder, and name it the same as the course it is for. Then, upload your file into that folder
  3. Select the file and click Share, depicted as a person with a plus sign near the top of the page
  4. Under General Access, ensure that Gustavus Adolphus College is selected, not restricted
  5. Click Copy link
  6. Open your Moodle Course
  7. In the course section where you want to add the document, click Add an activity or resource
  8. Select URL from the bottom of the list under Resources
  9. Give the URL a name
  10. Paste the link in the External URL field
  11. Click Save and Return to Course

Cause

If the files you want to use in your Moodle course are too large to upload (videos, images, recorded presentations, etc), you can upload them to your Gustavus Google Drive and share that link in Moodle.
